Adding recessed lights turned into a bigger electrical project, anyone else?

We wanted to get rid of the old boob lights in our living room and hallway and put in recessed lighting, which I thought would be a simple swap. The first electrician who came out said sure, but then he started poking around and found that half the outlets on that circuit weren't grounded and the wiring in the attic was a mess from a previous owner's DIY job. So what started as a lighting update is now turning into a full electrical upgrade for that part of the house. I'm not thrilled about the extra cost but I also don't want to ignore obvious safety issues. I started searching for recessed lighting and electrical upgrade services in Palo Alto because I figure if I'm paying someone to be up in the attic anyway I might as well have them fix everything at once. Has anyone else had a small project snowball like this? How did you decide where to draw the line between necessary and nice to have? I'd love to hear how you handled the budget surprise because right now my head is spinning.
